Dr. Lin Tao Shares Latest Research Findings at the School's Biweekly Academic Seminar On the afternoon of September 17, 2025, the School of Economics successfully held its Biweekly Academic Seminar in Conference Room 718. Dr. Lin Tao, a young faculty member of the school, presented his latest research titled The Impact of Large-Scale Water Diversion on Urban Land Markets.
Dr. Lin Tao's research addresses how the uneven spatial distribution of water resources constrains economic development in rapidly urbanizing areas. Focusing on the impact of water resource imbalance on urban land markets, his study uses the South-to-North Water Diversion Project as a case study, employing a difference-in-differences approach and parcel-level datasets for empirical analysis. The findings reveal that the project led to an average increase of 8.47% in land prices in the water-receiving areas, stimulating transaction activities in the land market. Mechanism analysis indicates that these effects were driven by intensified economic activities, industrial expansion, and population adjustments. Heterogeneity analysis further shows an uneven distribution of benefits from large-scale water diversion: the impact was almost entirely concentrated on residential and commercial land parcels, with negligible effects on industrial land. The effects were also more pronounced along the central route and in arid regions. During the interactive session of the seminar, attendees actively raised questions, creating a lively atmosphere. The discussions covered various aspects, including causal identification, mechanism interpretation, and ways to promote urban economic development.
